2012 SG-1 Big Bang

The stargate_summer SG-1 Big Bang is back for 2012! Both on Livejournal and Dreamwidth! You may sign up and participate through either site.

Rules and Information

For authors:

• Stories should be 20,000 words minimum.


• There are no restrictions on genre or pairing. Stories must be primarily focused on SG-1 characters, settings, plot bits, etc. (AUs and crossovers with other shows, including SGA and SGU, are permissible.) Stories with excessive warnings are often difficult to match, so proceed at your own risk.


• You may submit something you've already started, as long as:
  a) it hasn't yet been publicly posted anywhere in its entirety, and
  b) it meets the other qualifications.


• Stories must be beta-read before final submission. If you need a beta, you can look for one at sg1betas.


• You may sign up as individuals or as a co-author team.


• All authors and co-author teams must join and watch the moderated stargate_summer for posting and the unmoderated sos_lounge for important announcements, kvetching, screaming, and moral support. You'll receive invitations to both once you've signed up.

Author signup will begin Jan 4, and continue until rough draft submission. You may sign up early and get to work, or work first and sign up when you know you can commit. You haven't locked into the SG-1 Big Bang until you submit your rough draft (due on March 31).

• A rough draft of your story—completed, but unpolished—and a summary must be submitted by email between March 1 and March 31. This is the draft that will be given to the artist matched up with you. (More information about submitting your rough draft will be released in late February.)
  Rough draft extensions will be granted as needed and upon request, but it won't grant you much extra time.


• A final version of your story is due to the community based on posting dates which will be selected and assigned in April/May. The earliest posting date is May 30, the latest posting date is July 11.


• Extensions will be granted to the author-artist team for final posting as needed and upon request but will be monitored. More information about extensions will be released in April.


• If you join the challenge late or otherwise miss the rough draft due date, you are invited to participate during Amnesty Week after official posting is over. If artists/vidders/fanmixers are available, stories posted during Amnesty Week may be eligible for claiming.

Sign-up as an author


For artists and vidders and fanmixers:

• For the story you choose:
  artists will be signing up to produce at least 3 pieces of art
  vidders will be signing up to produce at least 1 video
  fanmixers will be signing up to produce an at least 6-song fanmix.


• Art can be of any sort: hand-drawn, painted, Photoshop, manip, photography, physical media such as sculptures, knitting, etc.—any kind of visual media. Videos can be music videos, a “trailer” for the fanfic, handpuppet theater—anything that can be put in a video format. Fanmixes can be any genre of music, any length.
  You will need to host your own work, so please abide by any websites’ rules regarding copyright laws so your work does not violate their TOS.


• You may sign up as individuals or as a team if you would like to collaborate with another person.


• All artists/vidders/fanmixers and art/vid/fanmix teams must join and watch the moderated stargate_summer for posting and the unmoderated sos_lounge for important announcements, kvetching, screaming, and moral support. You'll receive invitations to both once you've signed up.

Signups for artists, vidders, and fanmixers will begin March 15 and continue through April 11. On April 9, summaries of the stories will go live. At that time, artists, vidders, and fanmixers claim summaries to create art/vid/fanmix for that specific story. You are not locked into the SG-1 Big Bang until you claim a story.

• More information about the claiming process will be available in late March, but we are anticipating that an artist, vidder, or fanmixer may claim two stories.


• You will be given your author's rough draft after claiming ends, hopefully on or around April 15. You will have until your posting date (the earliest of which is May 30) to complete your artwork/vid/fanmix.


• Extensions will be granted to the author-artist/vidder/fanmixer team as needed and upon request but will be monitored. More information about extensions will be released in April.


• If you join the challenge late or otherwise miss the claiming, you are invited to participate during Amnesty Week after official posting is over. Amnesty Week stories that are available will be up for claiming in June.

The Schedule

January 4: Sign-ups for authors open.
March 15: Sign-ups for artists, vidders, and fanmixers open.
March 31: Rough draft of stories and story summaries due to moderators. Sign-ups for authors close.
April 9: Summaries are posted for artist/vid/fanmix claiming. Claiming continues until all stories are claimed. Sign-ups for artists, vidders, and famixers close when claiming ends.
April 15: Rough drafts are sent to artists/vidders/fanmixers.
May 30: Final stories/art/vids/fanmixes for early June posting are due.
June 1: First story goes live.
June 20: Final stories/art/vids/fanmixes for late June/early July posting are due.
July 11: Final stories/art/vids/fanmixes for July posting are due.
Once all stories are posted there will be an Amnesty Week for any writers who missed the rough draft date.

Can we ask for a specific range of posting date? greenbirds and I have gone the "see if we can do it before signing up" route, but it would be nice to have as much elbow room as we can get.

We do date claiming after media claims are finished so the artists and authors can together choose a date that is appropriate for everyone. I usually ask for availability and preferences at that time and then slot people in as necessary.

This year we are doing moderated posting so all stories will be due in the queue on either May 30, June 20, or July 11. If we have fewer or more participants than expected, we'll adjust those due dates accordingly.
